Ein Booster verstärkt normalerweise das Signal, ohne es zu verzerren oder groß abzuändern (Clean Boost). Viele Booster besitzen aber soviel Gain, dass sie dadurch auch den Verstärker selbst in die Verzerrung treiben können (Overdrive).
